Nexplanon Insertion
If you are looking for a birth control option where you do not need to remember to take a pill or use a device, you may be a good candidate for Nexplanon®. This is a birth control implant that is placed under the skin and is known as the “get it and forget it” pregnancy prevention option. If you are looking for a long-lasting birth control method, come see us at Primary Care Joliet. We offer Nexplanon insertion at our clinics in Wilmington and Joliet, IL.
How Birth Control Implants Work
Nexplanon is a tiny birth control implant that is shaped like a small stick. The implant contains progesterone, a hormone that impacts the female reproductive process. This is the same hormone used in birth control pills and other devices designed to prevent pregnancy. The hormone helps stop ovulation – if the ovaries do not release eggs, you will not get pregnant. It also thickens the lining inside the uterus to help prevent sperm from entering the fallopian tubes.
Nexplanon slowly releases progesterone over a five year period. It is meant to be inserted during the first five days of your menstrual period for immediate pregnancy protection. It can be taken out at any time if you no longer want to use this type of birth control, or if you decide you want to get pregnant.
What to Expect
If you decide Nexplanon is right for you, our medical team can insert your implant. During the procedure, we will numb a spot on your arm where we will place the implant. A needle is used to insert the implant under the skin. After the numbing agent wears off, the area where the implant is inserted may be sore for a few days. You may have bruising from the injection, but this will go away as the site heals.
Nexplanon is a convenient option for birth control, since there is not a risk of forgetting to use pregnancy protection.
